Maggie Valley NC Hotel - Lodging in the Smoky Mountains at the Abbey Inn Motel

hotel motel in Maggie Valley in the Smoky Mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway

WILDFLOWERS

North Carolina's roadways abound with hundreds of varieties of wild flowers.  Many of those along our highways are provided by the Department of Transportation, but most were provided by Mother Nature. This link will tell you about all the varieties to be found along all our roadsides. On the Blue Ridge Parkway and throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park there are miles of trillium, jack-in-the pulpit, ferns, Turk's head, and hundreds more. Mountain Laurel and rhododendron add a riot of color to the landscape.  Although many of the flowers in Maggie Valley were planted by man, there are numerous areas where nature rules.  We have about an acre full of nearly 50 varieties within our hard cove woods right in our backyard at the Abbey Inn. Be sure to bring your flower identification book on your visit. It'll get plenty of use.

10.  Although if you've seen the commercials advertising Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge you would think otherwise. 60% of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located in North Carolina.  Although the Tennesee side towns within a short drive of the Smoky Mountains, we in Maggie Valley are right in the middle of them.  When you visit the area, be sure to bring your camera and binoculars.  There are a great many photo opportunities of all kinds of wildflowers and many, many types of birds.
